| The blocks are 4 x 3 1/2 inches each, which is in direct relation to the human palm. The small paintings are tactile and approachable as individual pieces. Yet, when placed alongside one another in quantity, they expand and take on a larger physical form. This dichotomy is at the heart of my process. The idea to encompass a large space comes from the notion of progression, spreading, and multiplicity. I have been experimenting with the idea of multiplicity through the block paintings. I am interested in the viewer's reaction to the block series whether I exhibit as little as 24 pieces or as much as 2,000. The viewer reaction to the piece changes with the size of the painting. When I exhibit small amounts of blocks they become very approachable. When 2,000 are exhibited they are installed on the floor and take on a larger than physical life form. |
